Protect Your Child’s Smile

boy cleans a teeth As a parent, you have a big role to play in keeping your child’s teeth healthy and clean. You can help prevent cavities. Prevention starts at home, with good eating habits and daily cleaning of the teeth.

The Canadian Dental Association reminds us that a healthy mouth is also an important part of a healthy body. Poor oral health can affect a person’s quality of life. Oral pain, missing teeth or oral infections can influence the way a person speaks, eats and socializes. These oral health problems can reduce a person’s quality of life by affecting their physical, mental and social well-being. Research has shown there is an association between oral disease and other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, respiratory illness in older adults, as well as pre-term and low-birth-weight babies. Although researchers are just beginning to understand this relationship, evidence shows that oral disease can aggravate other health problems and that keeping a healthy mouth is an important part of leading a healthy life.

There are lots of dental services available in Lanark County, including the many fine dentists and dental clinics in your community.  If you can’t afford to send your child to the dentist, you have options and they are outlined on the LLG Public Health Unit website!

Healthy Smiles is a no-cost preventative program for eligible Ontario children, aged 17 and under,  to visit a licensed dental provider for cleaning, fillings, x-rays, scaling and more.

CINOT is a provincially and municipally funded program for children in need of restorative and preventative dental services. This program ensures that all Ontario children in urgent need of dental care will receive immediate treatment. The Health Unit Oral Health Team provides oral screening in area schools on an annual basis and at various locations throughout the year in the tri-county area. If you would like to arrange an oral screening for your child, please contact the Health Unit. If your child is eligible for coverage under the CINOT program, the Health Unit will provide you with a dental claim form for you to take to the dentist of your choice. The dentist sends the claim to the Health Unit for payment.

A  preventative Fluoride Varnish program is also being used in select schools in Lanark.

Think, Feel, Act

Think, Feel, Act:  Lessons from Research About Young Children

The Ministry of Education is committed to supporting early years settings in providing high quality early learning and development opportunities for children across Ontario. The

Ontario Early Years Policy Framework describes how high quality programs have an extraordinary and long-lasting impact on children’s development, and therefore we want to do everything we can to support educators in their continuous professional learning.

The Ministry has worked with leading experts in the field of early childhood education to develop six research briefs for educators working in early years settings.

We are pleased to present these briefs, which highlight the latest research in early childhood development, strategies to put the key ideas into practice and reflective questions for educators. You will notice a common thread throughout the briefs: a view of the child as competent, capable of complex thinking, curious, and rich in potential.

These briefs are intended to challenge the status quo and encourage critical reflection as we consider our work from different perspectives. As ‘briefs’, the documents are not intended to provide an in-depth analysis of each topic, but instead we hope to pique your interest and highlight key ideas that are useful and relevant to your work. We encourage you to use the reflective questions throughout the briefs to stimulate personal reflection and team discussions. We also invite you to try out some of the suggested practices and exchange ideas with your colleagues.

Above all, we hope to get people talking about some of the big ideas that have such a significant impact on the experiences of children across the province.

Thank you for everything that you do for the children of Ontario.

Don’t Wait and See!

Is your child ready for Kindergarten?

It is very important that your child be able to speak clearly and ask questions, listen and follow instructions, and play

appropriately with other children.

10-12% of preschool children have speech and language difficulties that will

make it hard for them to succeed in school and in life.

Take a moment to think about your child’s speech and language skills:

Can your 4 year old:

Follow instructions with three or more steps? e.g. “First get your crayons and paper, then draw a picture and

then give it to Grandma.”?

Use adult-type grammar?

Tell stories with a clear beginning, middle and end?

Talk to try to solve problems with adults and other children?

Be understood by strangers almost all of the time?

Make up simple rhymes e.g. Cat – Bat?

Match some letters with their sounds e.g. letter T says “tuh”?

Start a conversation and keep it going on the same topic for at least three turns?

DON’T WAIT AND SEE…..

If you are concerned about your child’s speech and language skills or are interested in how your child is doing, call the

Language Express Preschool Speech System at
